Each one cancels the last was written for Stephen Upshaw in October and November 2016. It presents a series of miniatures for viola and prepared piano alongside recordings taken from large open spaces, both natural and artificial. The piece continues an exploration of music built around notions of repetition and recycling material, creating works which I see more as a static structures to be observed from various angles and decoded, rather than followed through a clear, linearly driven narrative.

An interview about the performance-installation version can be read here, and a review here.
